Q:
What kinds of surfaces can I decoupage on with Mod Podge® or Royal Coat® Decoupage Finish?
A:
Wood: Fill in any holes with wood putty, sand, seal, and base paint. If you are going to completely cover a wood piece with a print, no base painting is necessary.
Papier Mache: Base paint if desired. This will not be necessary if entire surface will be covered with prints.
Terra Cotta: Wipe terra cotta with damp cloth. Sand to remove any rough spots or loose particles. Wipe with damp cloth again. Base paint with acrylic paint.
Tin: If using old tin, clean it up with a vinegar/water solution. Sand to remove any rust and to make sure surface is smooth. A wire brush can be used on very stubborn rust spots. If there are rust holes, repair them with filler (available at hardware stores); sand filled areas when dry. Remove all rust with rust remover; wash it off with paint thinner. Paint on a coat or two of an anti-rust primer paint and let dry before base painting. Base paint with acrylic paint. If anti-rust primer is not used, use a paint suitable to the tin surface such as Apple Barrel ® Gloss which is an acrylic enamel. If using new, unfinished tin, simply wash tin with a vinegar/water solution to remove oily film then paint.
Plastic: Base paint with a paint suitable for a slick surface, such as Apple Barrel ® Gloss. When covering entire surface with prints, base painting is not necessary.
Cardboard: Base paint unless entire surface will be covered with prints.
Plastic Craft Foam: To create a smooth surface for decoupage, seal the project surface with a coat of Royal Coat ® Decoupage Finish before beginning project. Base paint.
